Year 7 played their first basketball fixture representing Southam College against Campion on Tuesday evening. The boys started brightly and the first basket was scored by Captain Dom after some good team play. Spike scored his first basket of the evening almost immediately after to give Southam a 4-0 lead. Some neat interchanges gave Southam plenty of chances to score but they couldn’t capitalise until the last play where Jacob scored a free throw.
The second quarter started in a similar fashion, Southam conceded the first basket but then had strong defence and extended their lead after Jack scored a great basket after a quick break away. Spike doubled his tally with a good set shot before Dom scored again after terrific work in defence by Noah to steal the ball. Half time score 11-2.
Southam didn’t score in the third quarter but showed some gritty defence through Blake, Noah and Jake who all intercepted and started attacks well.
The 4th quarter was all about Jack, 3 baskets scored. The first was a clever lay up after a smart pass from Jacob, the second was a set shot after support from Dom before arguably the best basket of the evening which was a a lay up after a lovely spin and dribble.
Final score 17-4 to Southam.
MVP- Dom for fantastic link up play and crucial baskets when the game was tight.
A fantastic first game from the year 7s. The boys were strong in defence and clinical in attack. A good performance to build upon.
Well done year 7.
