Southam year 7 football team played Kenilworth in the district cup semi-final on Monday evening. The team were fully aware that they would have to be at their best to avenge the 3-0 defeat Kenilworth inflicted in the league 2 weeks ago.
From the first whistle Kenilworth were on the front foot and could have scored in the first minute. Southam did grow into the game and scored against the run of play through Harry after great pressing in the midfield from Archie and Oli. Harry’s finish was calm and neatly dispatched into the bottom corner. This gave Southam confidence to try and pass the ball around. The game was firmly played in Southam’s half with very few opportunities for the striker. Southam pressed, made challenges and were fortunate to be 1-0 up at half time as Kenilworth had wasted a number of good opportunities.
Early in the second half Kenilworth did finally score, a well struck free kick from the angle of the box, straight into the top corner. Southam didn’t let their heads drop and fashioned 2 excellent chances which we were extremely unlucky not to score. The game was much more even in the second half with both teams searching to find the winning goal. Kenilworth hit the post twice and Southam were denied by some good defending after good play down both wings. Noah also ensured the game was level heading into the last 5 minutes with a great last ditch clearance. Unfortunately, Kenilworth did score with 3 minutes of the game remaining. A fantastic team goal resulting in a tap in. Southam continued to search for an equaliser but couldn’t quite find it. Final score 2-1 to Kenilworth.
A very pleasing performance, one which the boys should be proud of. You matched a team that had beaten us previously and the result could have quite easily been different. I am extremely proud of you all for reaching the semi final and the fantastic football that you have played. Thank you to everybody who came along and supported the team, it’s very much appreciated.
Well done year 7
