Monday evening saw the year 8 team play the first football fixture of the new season in an away league and cup fixture against Studley. The team were hopeful of building upon their success from year 7 as they transitioned from 9 a side to 11 a side.
Southam started brightly and passed the ball around with composure, the boys created a few early chances through Josh and Charlie but neither were taken. The breakthrough goal came from a well delivered corner from Oli which was nodded home by Archie. Southam continued to play attacking football and more chances were created through Harry and Maxton. Southam doubled their lead after good play from Fred who found Ronan who held off the defender before calmly slotting past the keeper. 2-0 half time score.
Southam found themselves defending more at the start of the second half and were undone after a defensive mix up allowed the Studley striker to unleash a great strike from 20 yards. This kick started Southam who then dominated the play. Calm passing and moving allowed Harry to break down the right before drilling the ball into the top left corner. Archie then doubled his tally for the evening with a a great left footed strike. Joe found himself unlucky to have his goal struck off for offside. The back 4 were marshalled well by Captain Noah and goalkeeper Jasper and started attacks well throughout the game. Southam’s final goal of the evening was scored after a neat through ball from Alfie to Ronan who curled his effort round the keeper into the top right corner. Full time score 5-1.
Man of the Match: Oli, a tremendous performance in the middle of midfield. Calmly collecting the ball and looking to start attacks.
A thoroughly pleasing performance to start the season. Well done Gents.
