Year 8 Rugby

Lloyd licks his lips with fab 5 as Coulter keeps clean sheet
Southam 30 Ashlawn 0

An odd one to call this – a win yes – a convincing win – again in score line, yes. However the lads know that they may have been reading their own press a little too much in a performance that left much to be desired. In fairness there were offsides that made the game scrappy, (by both teams), but this exceptional side can and will improve on this performance.
Poor rucking and sloppy tackling grabbing big lads and hugging rather than swiping their legs away was an issue. With 5 minutes gone it looked business as usual Charlie S strode over the line after a wide move. He had a groin twinge and as a precaution was taken off. The team had however more than enough fire power to sort out the situation. Silly long  passes that were flung without thought led to hand over ball and the Ashlawn big runners made ground as players slid off tackles. If it were not for 2 champagne moment tackles by Joe C we could have gone level. He shows all how to tackle and deserves his joint man of the match award.
The second try was a great run by Ally M and then a ruck that showed signs of improvement by the team. Harry picked and went sprinting for the line. 10 – 0 at half time and a bit of a talking to was required. The second half showed gradual but improved performances with good tackling by James E, Josh E, and Harry L. Finally the backs put the ball through the hands and Harry L went  through for his next. Lewis S started to get back to his predictable self hitting rucks and stealing ball and this resulted in Harry getting a free pass, going over for his 3rd. Tommy B looked pleasing in the rucks and the forwards drove the ball forward. Harry picked again and drove over the line for his 4th. The last try was far more like Southam of old in the build up. A scrum – good backs play, some solid rucks… but then too many pick and drive when the ball should have been recycled to the backs. Never-the-less Harry went over for his 5th and showed a cutting edge that gave him the deserved man of the match alongside Joe.
Boys – plenty to do to reach the heights we know we can.
Alcester next game and we played exceptionally well last year to beat a good team.  Training Thursday – a great bunch of lads will get back to performing the wa
