Phipps ‘fabtastic’ as year 8’s back on form vs AGS

After a poor previous ,( all be it winning ) game – and the riot act being read – players were ready to go with new drive as they faced a hard tackling Alcester Grammar School ( AGS) at home. The lads took on a pre-match team talk and put it into play.

The intensity of the team was very much better from the off. New debutant Charlie P impressed in training and was given a start and drove the ball in around the ruck, the ball was recycled by a pack that went back to basics and Charlie S finished well. This was a similar story for much of the game. The next try was another well set ruck after good defence from AGS. The ball went wide but a poor pass went to the floor only for George P to run in from full back and pick the ball off his toes from the bounce – finishing wide right.
The next was a typical Charlie S run after a great carry by Sam R. A response from a hard working AGS was on the cards and they scored with impressive carries by big players and an offload to the wing. An automatic response was needed and after a good ruck with Charlie P running hard, Callum M passed on to Josh E who gave a great show and go left the defence for dead, popping it up to mobile prop Will H. to go over. Will’s tackling was outstanding as was Joe C’s, and James E’s.
AGS were faltering after great recycling ( such a change from previous game) and quick handling saw Thomas H go over. A pick and go from Charle S after good work from the forwards made it 6 tries and then he got his last of the half with a stroll over after great backs work and a scintillating run from Thomas H ( aka Jack Knowles) as he became the provider for the walk in.

The second half saw a good try from AGS. Southam’s response was from Charlie S and a great finish by Harry L in a team try after James E linked with Charlie P who set the ruck for Harry to show great balance and elusiveness to go over. AGS were a creditable side but Southam u13 listened to instructions, the forwards set the base with fantastic rucking and quick ball for the backs to finish. A great team effort. Charlie S should be credited with great tries and Thomas H was outstanding on the wing but this was a team performance where Charlie P was a typical example of hard running, great tackling and presentation of the ball.

FINAL SCORE SOUTHAM 50 – AGS 10.
