On Wednesday evening, Southam Y8 football team hosted Myton in their first game after the Christmas break. After a good training session on Monday, Southam were confident that they could put in a good performance. The game started brightly with neat passing interchanges with Archie and Oli dictating the tempo and looking to recycle the ball as much as possible. Both full backs gave the team width and allowed wingers Leo and Spike to run at the Myton defence. Southam had 3 early chances after good build up play but didn’t take advantage. This didn’t deter the team and the break through came after Archie turned, shot, and Josh followed up with the rebound to give Southam a deserved 1-0 lead. Soon after, Harry scored his first of the evening after a good play from the midfield. Southam continued to play well and keep the ball, always looking to switch the play to start attacks. The third goal came after good hold up play allowed a set to Harry who delicately chipped the keeper from 20 yards. Southam continued to press with Oliver and Reshawn starting attacks. A great through ball allowed Harry to score his hat trick goal with a tidy finish into the bottom corner. Archie then got on the score sheet having been provider for 2 goals with a fantastic dipping volley into the far corner. Southam had other chances to score but were denied by the goal keeper. Noah and Charlie marshalled the defence well and encouraged the midfielders to build play. The final goal of the first half was scored after a terrific Ronan delivery from a corner which Jasper W headed home from a tight angle. Half Time score 6-0.
Despite lots of changes throughout the first half and at half time, Southam continued to play good football and mainly played off two touch and retained possession. Lots of chances were created by the hard working Joe and Alfie as well as Jasper in midfield. Southam scored a brilliant team goal after Oliver released Harry down the left wing before a clever pull back allowed Oli to shoot past the keeper into the top corner from 18 yards. Alfie and Joe continued to link well with Ronan before the final goal of the game was scored by Harry who beat 2 players before unleashing an unstoppable shot into the top corner from 25 yards. Final score 8-0.
Overall, an absolutely fantastic team performance. Every single player played their part and it is the best that I have seen the team play together since they arrived at Southam College. What is most pleasing is that the players put into practice what was done at training. Well done gents. See you all at training on Monday.
