A windy Wednesday evening at Central Ajax saw the year 10s play Kineton in the Mid & South Warwickshire District Cup final. The team started nervously and conceded a couple of early chances that were stopped by Jasper and Jay. Southam grew into the game and started to play the ball around. Ronan, Charlie, Dom and Jay kept things tight at the back, whilst Oli and Jack broke up the play in the middle of the pitch. Southam scored with their first opportunity with a good pass into Harry who turned well before striking from distance into the bottom corner. This goal gave the team more confidence and good wing play from Spike and Maxton created some half chances. Southam had the opportunity to double their lead from a corner but missed a free header from 6 yards! They did double their lead when Harry got fouled. Oli stepped up and scored the resulting free kick. Kineton hit straight back with a well taken goal to make the score 2-1. Southam didn’t let this deter them and great feet from Harry allowed him space to shoot with a big deflection taking it past the keeper to make the score 3-1 at half time.
The second half was a different story, Southam had to defend resolutely. Kineton continued to press. Some fantastic last ditch tackles from Charlie, Ronan, Fred and Noah kept Kineton at bay. Kineton did get a goal back after a volley into the net from a corner. For the remainder of the game Southam stuck to the task and defended brilliantly. There were some chances for Southam to extend the lead with Leo hitting the cross bar and Josh chasing defenders down to force chances for Oli and Jasper. Despite there being 7 minutes added time, Southam held on to win the game 3-2!
Man of the match goes to Harry for a fantastic selfless performance with some great defending as well as a hand in all 3 goals!
A fantastic team performance where each and every player played their part. I am so proud of the boys achievements and the way they have developed since they started in year 7! Well done lads!
Thank you to all parents and supporters for coming to watch. It was greatly appreciated
An extremely proud head of year and football manager!
